Component Library

Trace includes a comprehensive library of components with symbols, footprints, and 3D models.

Built-in Libraries

Trace ships with the standard KiCad libraries, including thousands of components:

  • Passive components (resistors, capacitors, inductors)
  • Semiconductors (diodes, transistors, ICs)
  • Connectors and mechanical parts
  • Power management ICs
  • Microcontrollers and processors

Searching Components

Use the symbol browser (A in schematic editor) to search by:

  • Part name or number
  • Description keywords
  • Package type
  • Manufacturer

AI Component Selection

The AI assistant can suggest components based on your requirements. Describe what you need:

"I need a low-dropout regulator that can handle 12V input and provide 3.3V at 500mA with good thermal performance"

The AI will suggest appropriate parts from the library.

Custom Libraries

Add custom component libraries via Preferences > Manage Symbol Libraries and Preferences > Manage Footprint Libraries. Trace supports standard KiCad library formats.

Creating Components

For parts not in the library, you can create custom symbols and footprints using the built-in editors. The AI can assist with footprint creation if you provide the datasheet dimensions.

Footprint Assignment

Each symbol needs an associated footprint for PCB layout. Assign footprints via:

  • Symbol properties in the schematic
  • Tools > Assign Footprints (bulk assignment)
  • AI assistance ("use 0603 packages for all resistors")
