# Footprints Library

> Browse, search, generate, and contribute PCB footprints at footprints.buildwithtrace.com

[footprints.buildwithtrace.com](https://footprints.buildwithtrace.com) is a free, open catalog of 15,000+ PCB footprints for KiCad and Trace.

## Browse & Search

The catalog includes:

* **15,428 footprints** from the official KiCad footprint library
* **155 libraries** covering all standard package types (QFP, BGA, SOT, DIP, connectors, etc.)
* **Community contributions** from users

Search by package name, pad count, or description. Filter by category using the sidebar.

## Copy & Download

Every footprint has a **Copy** button for pasting into your PCB editor and a **Download** button for the original `.kicad_mod` file.

  Downloads serve the original file with full courtyard, silkscreen, and 3D model references. Copy-to-clipboard provides the functional footprint with pads and outline.

## AI Footprint Generation

Click **Generate** (requires a Trace account) to create custom footprints:

1. Describe the package (e.g., "SOIC-8 with 1.27mm pitch, 3.9mm body width")
2. The AI generates a complete footprint with correct pad geometry
3. Preview, then copy or save

Generated footprints include:

* Correct pad sizes and spacing per IPC standards
* Courtyard and fabrication layers
* Silkscreen outline with pin 1 indicator

### Limitations

* Generated footprints follow IPC-7351 nominal land patterns
* Custom pad shapes (non-rectangular thermals, etc.) may need manual adjustment
* Verify critical dimensions against the component datasheet before manufacturing

## Contributing

Upload `.kicad_mod` files to share with the community. The submission process validates footprint structure and IPC compliance before review.

Same as the symbols platform — sign in with your Trace account. Browsing and downloading work without authentication.
